MODERN DAY SLAVE AUCTION IMPACTS HOUSTONIANS
While the Offshore Technology Conference was in Houston this week, Free the Captives raised much needed awareness through a mock auction where girls were being sold. The auctioneer/trafficker told the emotional and powerful story of each girl and how they came to be trafficked. These stories were based on the lives of the trafficked teens that Free the Captives serves. As the auctioneer recounts the paths that led to being trafficked, the buyers were leering and throwing money at the girls as they stood on the auction block.
Fox26 provided excellent coverage of the auction and live streamed it on their Facebook feed. The auction was viewed over 30,000 times and shared over 320 times, and the reactions were stunning. The video’s positive impact touched the hearts of many and raised the bar on their understanding of trafficking. However, in other Facebook comments, some men actually placed bids on the girls and made very disturbing comments. These comments highlight WHY Houston is a hub for trafficking. As long as men view women and girls as items to be purchased and used, traffickers will continue to go after young teens and lure them into trafficking.
You can help us change this mindset in Houston! Free the Captives is holding the #WeSeeYou Rally on Oct. 13-14. We want to line Bissonnet Street with thousands of Houstonians in protest against men who are buying women and young girls. These men, known as Johns, drive up and down Bissonnet, slowly…in BROAD daylight…buying girls. They have no shame. They do not care who sees them.
Well, we are going to put a stop to that! We will show them that Houstonians DO CARE! We will not allow these men to buy our daughters. Come to our volunteer meeting this Sunday, May 7 at 4pm at Bridgepoint Bible Church, 13277 Katy Freeway, Houston, TX 77079 and help us plan this important rally. It is time that we stand up for our daughters and the girls of our community!
You can help raise awareness by viewing and sharing the Fox26 video on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/
