Free the Captives

The Mission of Free the Captives

Free the Captives is an interdenominational, evangelical anti-human trafficking 501(c)(3) non-profit that engages and mobilizes the Christian community and partners with non-profits, law enforcement, and government agencies in the fight against modern day slavery.

As a volunteer run organization, the primary human trafficking objectives of Free the Captives are: (1) educating the community, (2) preventing and intervening in the trafficking of at risk teens, (3) reducing the demand, and (4) pursuing legal remedies to combat trafficking.

To achieve these objectives, Free the Captives will:

1.  Serve God and trust in His sovereignty (Psa 62:1-2, 1 Sam 3:8-10)
,

2.  Seek justice, encourage the oppressed. Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow (Isa 1:17b),

3.  Partner with local and international organizations in the fight against human trafficking (Eccl 4:9-12, Eph 4:-6),

4.  Pray for freedom for the captives (1 Thes 5:17, Isa 61),

5.  Respond thoroughly and quickly to individuals seeking to get involved and provide education and volunteer opportunities for the Houston community (Col 3:23),

6.  Focus on trafficking issues in Houston, nationally, and globally.

"Keys to Freedom" Project: Phase 3 of Reducing the Demand for Sex Trafficking Campaign

Free the Captives invites you to be a part of our campaign, “Reducing the Demand for Sex Trafficking.” Your help is needed to reduce the demand! We want to flood the offices of Mayor Parker, District Attorney Lykos, and Chief of Police McClelland with keys and these postcards. These items will remind these officials that they have the key to end sex trafficking by arresting the buyers in Houston. We need your help in getting the word out about Phase 3 of the campaign, the "Keys to Freedom" Project!

In Phase 2 of the campaign, during March 2012, you helped us collect over 11,000 letters to Governor Perry asking him to urge Houston city officials to focus on the demand side of trafficking by arresting the buyers. Only two buyers have been arrested in the last year and a half by the Houston Police Department. See Fox26 News coverage of the Reducing the Demand Campaign.

The primary solution to end trafficking is through reducing the demand for it.  Sex trafficking is a rampant problem in Houston, enslaving both international and native Houston girls and women. It is an economic issue of supply and demand. There will always be a supply as long as there is a demand for sex trafficking!

Pro Bono Christian Attorneys

Free the Captives is seeking strong, committed Christian attorneys to (1)  represent American teenaged trafficking victims and at risk girls in juvenile court proceedings on a pro bono basis  and (2) to research and draft anti-human trafficking legislation. We will meet on Sunday, April 22 at 12:30pm at First Presbyterian Church of Houston, 5300 Main Street, Houston, TX 77004. Lunch will be provided. This is our first meeting to start laying the groundwork for this new and exciting initiative. We are seeking both experienced criminal and juvenile delinquency attorneys as well as attorneys with other backgrounds who are passionate about serving those in need. Attorneys must be licensed in Texas. We are thankful to First Presbyterian Church for hosting this luncheon. If you are planning to attend, please RSVP by April 16th.

2012 Houston Human Trafficking Conference

Free the Captives' Second Annual Interdisciplinary Houston Human Trafficking Conference  was on February 18, 2012 at Houston's First Baptist Church at 7401 Katy Freeway, Houston, TX 77024. We had 520 people attend 18 presentations by local and international presenters from Christian organizations, non-governmental organizations, academia, and governmental agencies. This was a conference intended to spread knowledge, provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of research and professional work, and provide the community with volunteer opportunities.

“Just Rap” Awareness Concert

“Just Rap” was a free event that featured an exciting concert by "Crucified," a Christian Hispanic rap group, a BBQ lunch, and a message about human trafficking on Sept. 17, 2011 at Mission Centers of Houston.  This community awareness event was an outreach for the Latino community.  Just Rap event was hosted by FTC, Mission Centers of Houston, and Harvest Community Church. Free the Captives truly appreciated the volunteer support and lunch provided by Harvest Community Church.
